Shrimp Festival 2015

Shrimp Festival 2015

Another year another shrimp festival. As much as I love shrimp it is still hard to eat it when you know that for every pound of shrimp that is caught in trawl nets in the Sea of Cortes approximately 5 -10 pounds, or more, of reef fish are killed in the process as what is referred to as incidental by-catch.

I will in fact purchase and eat the shrimp that is caught by the small boat fisherman that fish from pangas, riberenos as they are called in Spanish. These fisherman have virtually no by-catch and any that they do produce they keep for themselves to eat or to sell. It is really the only sustainable shrimp fishing that exists in the Sea of Cortes.

There were some great looking shrimp dishes at this years festival though and below are some pictures from the event. There was also some great music, I unfortunately did not catch the name of the band. The vendors that showed up had some wonderful arts and crafts to sell, I was especially impressed with the beautiful pillows that were on display.
