One Billion Rising in Guaymas: Friday 14th of February

The statistics are not pretty. Violence against women is a world wide problem. One in three women will, in their life time, be beaten or raped. We are talking the whole planet here. Don’t believe that Guaymas or San Carlos is some kind of safe haven from all of this. It is not. The reason this event caught my attention the other day when I heard about it on Democracy Now is simple. I am at the moment investigating a case of ultimate violence against one of Guaymas’s own. Maria Jesus Coronado was brutally murdered while in the custody of the PEI (Policia Estatal Investigador). The PEI are state police crime investigators. They have an office right next to the post office here in San Carlos. Her murder and the subsequent attempt at a cover up has put the city of Guaymas in turmoil and made national headlines. It may be months or more before I begin to put down in words exactly what happened to Maria Jesus. I have spoken with family members and witnesses, and after months still have a long way to go.

Suffice to say please join Ines and I this Valentines day Friday the 14th of February at 5 p.m. for an hour of dance in support of the victims of violence via this world event OneBillionRising.org

When: Friday 24th of February, 2014 @ 5 p.m.
