Controversy at El Estero del Soldado

I had a very extensive post on this story that was unfortunately lost last week so I will give a brief update here. What has happened over at the Estero El Soldado is that the state governmental agency that is in charge of conserving the area has decided that it will now be in charge of developing the area as some kind of ecological theme park. CEDES the agency responsible for managing the Estuary has unilaterally decided that part of this development should consist of what could be one of the largest free standing zip lines in the whole country. CEDES actually started construction of the towers for the zip lines without proper permitting from the federal government.

Last week I met with Norma Nunez from the group Salvemos el Estero del Soldado and officials from the Instituto Nacional De Antropologia E Historia (INAH). The estuary has been a well know archeological site and registered with the INAH since the late 60’s. Two representatives from from INAH responded to a complaint made by Salvemos el Estero and Guaymas Tu Puerto on illegal construction within an archeological zone and the INAH sent two representatives to document the complaint and revise the area. We are still awaiting the report from them.
