I know I am not the only person in San Carlos that was outraged to hear that a women could so easily be murdered a stones throw from the police station. I found out about Adriana’s murder quickly because like most people now we get our security info from WhatsApp. When ever there is an active shooting people find out about it pretty quickly. My daughter graduated from high school in June and while we were at the church before ceremony the WhatsApp message received by god knows how many told us that there had been a shooting just a few blocks from the Fry Evo Auditorium so we needed to be the back way to the graduation and stay off of Serdan. On this occasion I was on my way to the marina but before I left I was texted by my wife and informed of the shooting. I grabbed my camera on my way out of the house still in a bit of shock but the shock seems to get less and less these days. It was strange because I had not seen Adriana in a while so eventually I went to her Facebook page and it was kind of hard to recognize the women I say on Face. I still really had in my mind the image of her as a little girl who helped her mother with the taco stand. Adriana was born three years before I moved here and there were not a lot of options back then for tacos. I ate there often and watched her grow up. I remember one morning seeing her with a small baby. I though to myself wow time fly’s and that kid has grown up and now there will be a new generation of family helping out at the family business.

Crime Scene Investigator approaches Adriana

The image I have of Adriana now that is kind of stuck in my mind as I bang on this keyboard is the one of her lifeless body lying under a garbage bag. The rumor mill in town started churning out possible reasons as to why she was murdered in such a brutal way. The killer from what I have heard essentially walked right up to her, threw her on the ground and shot her in the head at least twice and then unloaded his gun into her body. He then turned his gun on her father and was either out of rounds or the gun jammed, take your pick as to why her father survived. Then apparently the killer got back in his vehicle and calmly left town, or went to a safe house here in San Carlos, again take your pick to what ever scenario fits your fancy. Another successful hit with the police out of site. Basically San Carlos has two police patrols per day. And it is funny how those patrols never seem to be in the right place at the right time. Unless of course there is a gringo protesting garbage out side his house, then the cops seem to be able to show up right on time to bust him. But I digress…..

I am not a detective but this crime wreaks of passion. It has been rumored that Adriana hung out with the wrong crowd. She has been rumored to have at times carried a gun. Some one recently told me she jokingly mentioned to a friend that if they needed somebody to “disappear” that she had a connection. I don’t know if any of that is true but it is a small town and it seems like it was a crime of passion so some body knows something. There was at least one eye witness probably more.  It also appears that Adriana was at one time or another dating a Police Comandante by the name of Gustavo Navarrete. Gustavo by the way was the police office who was ambused just a few days ago next to the Marina Terra hotel and I was almost a witness to his attempted murder since I was on my way to a house just a stones throw from the Marina. The last report I heard he was fighting for his life at a Hermosillo hospital.

Gustavo Navarrete and the patrol truck that he drives 15129 was named in a Narco Manta a few months back as being involved in the string of home burglaries we have had recently in San Carlos. So it is with little surprise that he all of sudden was attacked. Was the sign just some disinformation by the cartel or was there some truth to it?

One theory I have heard is that someone from the local bad guys section decided that she knew to much and if she was dating a cop now that crossed the line and as a result she was murdered. I have no idea if any of this is true but if there were real detectives in the area that wanted to attempt to solve this crime I am sure they could quite possibly do it. The biggest problem there is that Adriana was not a rich girl from a well connected family.

I remember well the case of Miguel Angel Jiménez Paniagua. Miguel Angel was always a great guy to me. He was kidnapped in the parking lot of Walmart and brutally murdered by a gang of thieves out of Guaymas. His murder was solved but it took a lot cajoling and a great deal of effort from his family to make the PEI do their job. I don’t remember all the details of the case but these criminals were really pretty stupid and they used Miguel’s cell phone to try and extort money from his family. The bottom line is, the case was solved because the family demanded it be investigated and solved.

I am familiar with another case here in San Carlos that was far less dramatic but a crime non the less and a solvable crime. An acquaintance of mine was robbed as he left his house. He had a substantial amount of cash on him and he was on his way to the bank to make the deposit. Basically an inside job and the victims had a good idea of who did it. The state police flat out told them that if they were going to investigate and solve the case then they would have to pay, and it wasn’t cheap as I recall. That’s how it goes here. If you have cash or influence you might get the police to investigate and possibly solve your crime. Remember that stats say that 95% of crime in Mexico goes unreported or unpunished.

Adriana her orphaned child

So I feel for Adriana and her family and I know in my heart of hearts that her murder is probably solvable but never will be solved. I am gonna go back to the first image I have of her, as a little girl working in her moms taco stand. Her cowardly killer will not be allowed to rob me of that.
